About IRB TOSHIBA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

IRB TOSHIBA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP is the world prestigious championship for international teams at Under 20 level that integrates former U19 and U21 tournaments and was launched in Wales as the inaugural tournament last year. The IRB ranks this tournament as second important international tournament that is second to the Rugby World Cup (RWC) and the Rugby World Cup Sevens, both held once every four years. The tournament that sixteen teams will participate in and will run about one month will be the biggest international rugby tournament in Japan Rugby history and valuable opportunity to acquire valuable experience for U20 generation players who will be the central generation for the RWC2015.

FORMAT Pool Phase

16 teams have been allocated in 4 pools of 4 teams, and will play each other in respective pool on a round-robin basis. At the conclusion of the pool phase, the teams in a pool are ranked respectively as winner, runner up, third and fourth. The pool allocation has been determined based on the ranking of last year’s tournament as below.

<Pool A> Winner, 8th, 9th, Winner of Junior World Trophy 2008*
<Pool B> Runner up, 7th, 10th, 15th
<Pool C> 3rd, 6th, 11th, 14th
<Pool D> 4th, 5th, 12th, 13th
*Junior World Trophy is the lower tournament of JWC

Knock-out Phase

Same ranked teams in each pool play at Knock-out Phase and ranking from the tournament winner to the 16th will be determined.
*The 16th placed team shall be relegated to JWRT in next year.
